Good luck you guys with the new website. I check it every day from Los Angeles, and I might suggest you update daily before you leave work for the day at 6 pm. The other suggestion is you consider a wind report for the airport to increase your popularity for travelers into and out of Aspen, which will increase your advertising from aiport vendors like airlines, taxe and car services, etc. Further, you should have a web sites to link into of Aspen and the surrounding areas. There currently are 3 — for you to link to (aspen ski corp official one, aspen square and a travel site).. And I have a private web cam looking at Ajax from the top of the Isis Movie Theater where I live, and I know of a few more private ones. You should also make a daily deal with the Aspen Ski Corp (I can intro you to the CEO if you dont know him), Aspen Plum and KSPN and other radio stations to increase your revenue.
Good luck, as you guys have a great chance to make this work.

Thanks a lot brad we really appreciate the help! Cory will be sending you an in depth email this weekend to pass along to the CEO of ski co! We can also provide temperature forecasts for snowmaking as well. That’s key for how much personnel ski co needs certain nights so on and so fourth!! Thanks again and look forward to meeting with you and ski co soon!!! Ryan boudreau

Outstanding work Cory and Ryan! Every ski town needs a site like this! It is such a privilege to have dedicated weather professionals who understand the local conditions. I hope this ends up being the go-to website for everyone in the valley. I lived in Mammoth for 3 years and the comparable site there is http://www.mammothweather.com. All the locals swore by it.
Webcams are a great idea as is all the other things Brad mentioned but I’m sure with your backgrounds you’re already tapped into them.
Thank you for the hard work!!

Thank you John for the warm comment. We live in such a micro climate and being able to predict it correct most of the time is certainly a challege .thanks for the love brother and keep checking in with us!

I’ve been coming to Aspen since my Dad first brought me here at age 12, the last year they ran the single chair at Ajax. I’ll never stop coming back.
You guys are doing amazing work. Taking the micro-approach to forecasting is so cool. It is perfect for Aspen.
Thank you VERY much.
See you on the next powder day…I’m hoping next Friday or Saturday!

Scotty “T” ,
Thank you for the nice comments my friend. Whats funny about Aspen is the locals are not turned off in the least by a little detail. I can use big weather words every now and then and they grasp the concept perfectly. I have been here 6 or 7 years now and this is a very smart weather crowd who gets it!!!!
We will keep doing our thing and hopefully find some cash so I can stay glued to the computer and make sure we are on the dot!!! Chances for snow are looking better toward the middle and end of next week as it cant stay dry forever.
C ya

Do not dispair. I realize that everyone expects you to forecast deep pow days every day, but we all really want accurate unbiased forecasts that we can rely on. This is true even if we don’t want to hear bad news. Keep it honest and accurate and I for one will promo your folks all the way! Biking may be most excellent in Fruita as a alterrnative! SkiCo is only one option of many!

Thanks for this site. Please explain why an easterly wind precludes snowfall.
Thanks
aspenweather says:
December 21, 2011 at 10:21 pm (UTC 0 )
An east wind blows from the continental divide toward Aspen. As that wind travels over the high peaks of the divide is has to blow down the mountain ranges of the divide before it gets here. Its called a downslope wind. In the atmosphere, a wind that blows down a mountain range goes through compression. When air goes through compression it warms up and dries out. The fact that it dries out acts to evaporate radar echos and clouds on this side of the divide. The stronger the downslope wind the more the air dries out. An east wind is by far our worst wind. A west wind is just the opposite for Aspen. It is forced to ascend as it gets here from out west as the terrain acquires elevation.
Hope that helps…Always remember for us that east is least and west is best.

It would be great if you could create a section on your website with historical snowfall numbers by month (maybe 5 years back), as well as year-to-date precip compared to prior years. This would help put things in perspective, especially for times like now when it seems really dry, but in fact relative to the past couple years we’re average/normal/below/etc.
Thanks

Thanks for your response regarding east winds.
Does the compressed, dry, downslope east wind mix with the moist air and dehydrate it – or does the east wind have a mass effect that physically pushes the moist clouds away?
aspenweather says:
December 27, 2011 at 2:48 am (UTC 0 )
Since the air is drying because of compression…The clouds are actually evaporating. The wind does not displace the clouds, it evaporates them instantaneously like a PACMAN man just eating them up.

I heard about your website from Tony W. I own a snowplow company and have been following your predictions the last few months.
The two of you have been extraordinary for predicting whats going to happen locally. I love the resort versus in town (Aspen / Snowmass) predictions which really helps my company tremendously. Cory you and Ryan have saved my sleep this winter by allowing a prediction one can trust. I was using the 3 traditional forecast sites that everyone uses in my business along with waking up every hour checking my web cams. Keep up the good work

Thanks mark for the love! You will be able to monitor the weather very soon real time from your computer. We have a hd streaming live webcam that will be up on the site soon from the private airport. There will be a yearly fee but well worth it my friend!

Hi there,
I’ve been hooked on the site since i stumbled upon it several weeks ago. I certainly wish that some of your predictions did not come to realisation, (esp)ically the ones regarding the ‘lack of snowfall’…
We wil be flying from Sydney, Australia to LA and then on to aspen on the afternoon of the 16th Feb.. From you most recent posts it looks like we may be affected by the weather??
Would be great to keep us posted even though i’ll be refreshing the page morning and night.
Jack
P.s looks like it will be good timing snow wise.

I want to say thanks for providing this great website for free! I check it several times a day for the latest and greatest weather updates. It is helpful for us because we live down valley (above 7300’) but work in Aspen. It is nice to get a detailed weather forecast of both places to help us plan our commute for the day. Keep up the good work!

What do you mean when you say 7″-10″ Resorts and then say 4-7″ Aspen/SMV. Isn’t Aspen/SMV the resorts?
aspenweather says:
February 13, 2012 at 12:55 am (UTC 0 )
Resorts are Snowmass, AJAX, Highlands, Buttermilk. Aspen/SMV is downtown Aspen and Snowmass Village. DV is downvalley.
aspenweather says:

Aspen means downtown 8,000ft SMV means Snowmass village 8500 ft

Hi Stuart,
I do a ton of private aviation forecasts and Ryan and I are used to giving out this information. Even if you are flying commercial just email me when you are thinking about coming and I will give you detailed info about the best time to arrive a few days in advance!!
Thanks for checking the site out
